Explore the expressive combination of drawing and painting in this friendly five-week introduction to pen and wash. Combining the structure and character of pen with the softness and colour of watercolour/inks, this is a wonderful technique for capturing buildings, landscapes, plants and everyday scenes.
Over the five sessions, you’ll learn how to combine line and colour to create lively, expressive artwork. We’ll explore different pens and marks, simple drawing techniques, colour washes, layering and ways to add atmosphere and depth to your drawings.
You’ll work through a series of guided exercises and projects, gradually building your confidence with both pen and paint. We’ll explore how much detail to include, how to suggest rather than draw every element, and how to create interesting compositions.
There will also be an opportunity to make your own dip pen!
This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as anyone wanting to refresh their drawing or watercolour skills. You don’t need to be confident with either medium. Everything will be introduced step-by-step, with demonstrations and plenty of time to practise and experiment.
All materials are provided, so you can simply turn up and start creating. You’re also very welcome to bring along your own pens, watercolours, brushes or sketchbook if you already have them. If you have art supplies at home that you’re unsure how to use, bring them along and I’ll be happy to explain what they’re for and how you can make the most of them.
