How to Combine Collage and Drawing
For this project you will need:
Image or view to sketch
Sketchbook
Graphite pencil
Collage papers and glue
Coloured pencil
This project should take between 30 – 90 minutes.
This layered project began first with some mini sketches of little ‘vignettes’ from a magazine image.
I liked them so much I decided to replicate them with simple collage shapes. I developed the pieces with drawing to add details.
Working in small squares encourages focus and experimentation, while local views offer personal connection without pressure.
Collage provides structure, and drawing or painting on top allows you to respond intuitively. The process is forgiving and flexible, making it ideal for end of summer creativity.
Each square becomes a small visual diary.
To expand the project:
Create a grid that reads as one larger image
Create an image a day
Work with a limited colour palette
Swap realism for abstraction
Add written notes or place names into the collage
