Abstract Colour Field (Acrylics)

This playful painting project uses acrylic paint and a loyalty/credit card to create small abstract patterns. By removing the brush, you’re encouraged to focus on movement, colour interaction, and happy accidents.

By swapping the paintbrush for a credit card or similar tool, this project shifts focus away from control and towards movement and colour interaction. Dragging, scraping, and layering paint creates unexpected textures and patterns.

Working abstractly allows emotion and instinct to guide your decisions. The small format encourages experimentation without fear of “ruining” anything.

This is a playful but surprisingly sophisticated way to explore composition and colour relationships.

You’ll explore:

• abstract composition

• colour relationships

• expressive mark-making

Time: 30–40 minutes

Resources: acrylic paint, card, paper, masking tape

To expand the project:

• Work in a series using the same colours

• Limit the number of card movements per piece

• Rotate the paper while working

• Translate a successful abstract into a larger painting

Why should I use acrylic paint?

Acrylics are great for this technique as they dry quickly. They come in a wonderful amount of fun colours.

I also made the choice to use Soft Body Acrylics from Meeden Arts (don't forget to use the code Tricia10 for your discount). These paints have a thinner consistency, so flow and move easily. Plus they are a little transparent when used thin and layered over other colours.

Post your colour fields in the Art Hub, explore past projects, or join a course to learn more about abstract techniques.
