Botanical Line Study

Using a continuous line, this project invites you to slow down and really look.

Spring offers endless drawing opportunities. Using a continuous line encourages you to slow down and really look. By keeping the pen on the page, you’re freed from correction and perfection, allowing observation to take the lead.

This project is less about likeness and more about connection. The resulting drawings often feel lively and honest, capturing movement rather than detail.

It’s a gentle reminder that drawing is a conversation between eye, hand, and subject.

You’ll explore:

• hand–eye coordination

• observational drawing

• letting lines be imperfect

Time: 20–30 minutes

Resources: paper, pen or pencil, plant or leaf

To expand the project:

• Try blind contour drawing

• Draw the same plant on different days

• Scale the drawing up or down dramatically

• Layer multiple continuous line drawings on one page

Continuous line vs blind contour drawing. What is the difference?
