After Avebury, as it was a bit drizzle today I had to have a go at Stonehenge. Also had a chance to use my latest purchase a ‘stay wet palette’ Acrylic on hardboard
This is quite an unusual composition of Stonehenge with the low horizon , large dramatic sky, the fire in the background and shadows produced by the light falling on the stones. Also conceptual- destruction of the earth, but the stones still stand. Really like it!
I agree with Sue the light is very dramatic. But I do think the.clouds look too heavy. The far colours are lovely and give a great sense of depth, but the nearer clouds are painted a little too heavy. It maybe the very dark background under them or the heavy white paint. How did you find the stay wet palette?
Hi Tricia, Yes! I got too engrossed in painting the clouds with brush and my fingers and blending them in as I’ve seen others do. I tried to get the clouds brighter as they got closer to the moon and the foreground of the sky. One thing I should of done is stopped and walked back to get a different perspective. But I was pleased that I did manage to get a great depth in the sky and as this was the largest board I’ve worked on so far I had to work quite quickly to blend the initial acrylic sky wash. The stay wet palette is great! 4 days and the acrylic paint is still workable👍 I should have got a bigger palette but now I see how it’s working I think I can easily make one with a plastic tray, kitchen towel and grease proof paper
Thanks. I spent a lot of time with the sky trying to get different shades but I think now I may have over worked it a bit. Once I start finger painting the clouds I get a bit carried away 😎
