This works really well. As Thea says the background is a great contrast with the flower. But I think it's the dark green tone that pushes the flower forward adding depth to this image. Why did you choose the greeny-grey paper? Was it to contrast or blend in with your flower?
Thanks Tricia for your comments. I find choosing the paper colour for pastels quite difficult as to how it will affect the painting. I went for a natural, neutral colour for this one. I guess it would have been more dramatic if I’d chosen dark brown or blue, but then the background colours maybe wouldn’t have worked so well? What colour would you have chosen?
I wonder if you could have gone with a dark green, then added lighter highlights. You could have also gone with the light lilac-blue and not added any colour to the petals except the shading. But these choices are more about creating contrast and so a neutral colour allows you to just paint with the pastels and modify your image as you go along.
I like the 3D quality of this pastel drawing Helen. Lovely
Lovely image Helen. I really like the painterly effect produced by the soft pastels. Difficult to get with another medium.
