I used pastel pencils on black paper - I hate using normal chalk pastels as it puts my teeth on edge, this is the compromise using special pastel pencils (supplied by Tricia).

I'm the complete opposite. The pencils are too hard and scratchy for me. I love a big block of colour gliding over the page. If I have pastel up to my elbows I'm happy!
