Taking baby steps with lino printing! I've been experimenting with colours and papers. Am I correct in thinking that the red print has too much ink on it - hence the marks in the leaf veins at the top of it? And the other two prints have slightly too little ink which is why there is some white showing through? the green print is on textured paper which probably doesn't help!
I really like these Helen
Thanks very much for your helpful comments Tricia.
Yes. You are probably right. Your red print may be too inked or it maybe that you didn't roll the ink out smooth enough on your inking plate first, so the roller is unevenly inked, which then lift a little too much ink either at the top of the plate or....over the edge of the cut line. The green is probably due to the paper being textured. Your 'rainbow roll' may be too little ink or not enough pressure when burnishing. This uneven printing can be a problem when you have large areas of inked surface. If you are using grey lino; some printer, lightly sand the lino surface first, to make sure it is even, before cutting. Laura Boswell does and I did a course with Ian Phillip's and he had us all sanding our lino for about 20-30 minutes! I have to say, I didn't see much difference and I've never worried about doing it. Although I do check for any imperfections first.
