I totally agree with Chris, I love the light coming through the branches. It really looks over you!Very dramatic. Is there anything you think you would do differently next time?
Thank you Tricia. With this type of experimental art there will be some paintings that work but also lots that don’t. Like you mentioned in the past, some artists experiment on very large pieces of paper using lots of different experimental techniques. They then cut out those sections that are relevant to what they want to depict and then develop those further. This is something I may try in the future. Some artists like Paul Thomas make lots and lots of random pencil marks and then interpret those marks after they have been made and eventually a discernible subject matter appears. It’s something I have not tried and this feels rather strange to me.
Thank you Chris. I drew the tree first with charcoal, then added paint and inks and manipulated the paper. Before the paint and ink dried I put quite a lot of fixative on top. This made the bark smooth and the paint and ink spread out. When dry I re-worked the tree a little with charcoal. All very experimental and sometimes it works…..
I really like the tree - the smooth bark and the way you've shown it bulging. And the light coming through the branches is very interesting. I'm thinking you did the tree first and background after?
