Learn Art with Tricia
Drawing is where we begin. Not to get things “right”, but to look more closely, build confidence and develop a way of working that feels steady and enjoyable.
I’m Tricia Johnson, a professional artist and experienced art teacher based in West Somerset. For over 25 years I’ve supported adults and young people to grow their skills, explore new materials and develop a personal creative practice. My teaching is rooted in clear guidance, patient encouragement and a belief that everyone can learn to draw and paint with the right support.
My lessons are structured but relaxed, designed to meet you where you are. Whether you’re joining a live art class, working through a self-paced course, booking private tuition or studying towards an Arts Award qualification, you’ll be guided step by step with practical demonstrations, thoughtful feedback and space to experiment.
This website is the start of your learning journey. You’ll find free lessons and resources, art courses, student galleries showing real progress, and pathways for home education, community projects and creative confidence-building. Everything here is shaped by years of teaching experience and a deep understanding of how people learn best.
If you’re looking for calm, encouraging art tuition that values process as much as outcome, you’re in the right place.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What types of art lessons do you offer?
I offer live art lessons, online courses and self-paced learning, as well as 1:1 private tuition. Lessons cover drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media and sketchbook practice. You can explore options on the Art Classes, Self-Paced Courses and Private Art Lessons pages.
Are your art courses suitable for beginners?
Yes. Many students start with little or no experience. Sessions are structured to build skills gradually, while more experienced artists are supported to develop confidence, technique and personal style. Each course clearly explains who it’s for.
What art subjects do you teach?
I teach drawing, watercolour, acrylic, gouache, pastel, pen and wash, printmaking, collage, sketchbook development and more. If you have a specific interest, you’re welcome to get in touch to discuss a bespoke session.
Do you teach online as well as in person?
I teach both. Online lessons are ideal if you prefer to learn from home or live further afield, while in-person sessions take place in West Somerset and nearby areas. Visit the Art Classes page for details.
Do I need my own art materials?
If you already have materials, you’re welcome to use them. If you’re new, I can suggest simple starter equipment or provide materials for certain sessions. Full details are explained on individual course pages.
Are your courses suitable for older beginners?
Absolutely. Many students begin or return to art later in life. Lessons are paced thoughtfully and designed to support learners at any stage.
Can I still get feedback even after a course has finished?
Yes definitely. Anyone can share their work on the Art Hub, even if you've never attended one of my courses. I pop on regularly to give feedback and encouragement. There are always other learners on there creating a supportive community space for you to share your work and ask questions.
Can I book 1:1 private art tuition?
Yes. Private tuition is available online, in your home, or at my studio once it opens. These sessions are tailored to your goals, whether that’s learning a new medium, building skills or developing a portfolio of work. See the Private Art Lessons page to learn more.
What home education services do you offer?
I offer tailored 1:1 art tuition for home-educated children and young people, either online or in person locally in West Somerset. Sessions can focus on skill-building, creative exploration, portfolio development or working towards Arts Award qualifications from Discover to Silver. Lessons are adapted to suit age, ability and learning style.
Are your lessons suitable for children or learners with SEND?
Yes. I have extensive experience teaching children, young people and adults with additional needs, including SEND learners. Sessions are adapted to suit individual learning styles. If you would like to know about access to a specific course, just get in touch and I can discuss what would suit your needs best.
How do I book an art lesson or course?
You can book directly through the website for live and self-paced courses. For private tuition or bespoke sessions, visit the Contact page and tell me what you’re looking for.
Do you offer workshops or artist talks for art clubs and groups?
Yes. I run workshops and artist talks for art clubs, community groups, schools and creative organisations. Sessions can focus on drawing, printmaking, mixed media or aspects of my own studio practice. Each workshop or talk can be tailored to suit the group’s experience level and interests.
Do you run fun art parties, even if we’re not very creative?
Absolutely. Arty parties are designed to be relaxed, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of experience. You don’t need to be “good at art” to take part. I guide the group step by step so everyone creates something they feel proud of, while enjoying the process together. Visit the Arty Parties page to find out more.
Where are you based?
I’m based in West Somerset and teach locally, online, and occasionally further afield by arrangement. Visit the West Somerset, Devon or Exmoor pages to see how I work in your area.
I’m not sure what I need. Can you help?
Absolutely. If you’re unsure where to start, send me a message and I’ll help you choose the most suitable option based on your experience, interests and availability.
