I've been working my way round a massive A1 lino block. Still quite a lot to go and some really scary bits I'm avoiding! ...... I'll add some more images on the comments.
You can see one of the original designs is actually about A6-A5 on an A4 sheet then all the subsequent designs and layouts until the last one, which I then cut out all the animals in her tummy, so I could move them up a little higher and get a bit more skirt and shoes in. These last two pieces I traced on to the lino block and then drew over with pen.
George. This is my own design. It is based on a piece I made about a year ago which was a set of Russian dolls. I liked the idea of fitting one shape into another and remembered The Old lady who Swallowed a Fly. It took quite a while to get each element to work together as I originally sketched in A4 size, then enlarged the design.
I won a design competition with Essdee, about a year ago, and a massive roll of lino was the prize. So I enlarged the design again! I drew my design onto layout paper and traced it onto the lino. But as I moved it around and reworked the design it kept smudging so I drew over the final(ish) design in permanent pen.
Sorry I don't have any board wide enough. An off cut of kitchen worktop may be just wide enough and that though heavy would be rigid. or an off cut of thick exterior grade ply or possibly an old door. I don't think cardboard would make it stiff enough 594 X 841mm = A1
Thanks. I've got some cardboard here. Just need to decide if.I keep it squared or cut away the sides. I need to think about how I'm going to print it and the best backing for that. Thanks though. Much appreciated.
Chris I think I was being overly independent! and keen. You've got me motivated to find a board before I cut any more, and my lino is way bigger than I realised. I have some backing board from old frames which I thought would be ideal, but they are just not big enough! My lino is 17.3" wide by 26.5" high. (44x68 cm). If you do have anything this size that would be great. Thanks.
That's exactly what I'm finding! I don't have anything to attach it to. I'm on the lookout. The plan is to cut away the background so it won't be squared in the end. Another thing I've got to plan before I go any further!
Is A1 size about 1 metre by 1 metre? If it is, have you mounted it with spread adhesive to a stout ply backing board. If not, as you progress a line of weakness will find its way between areas you have carved. Causing a crack form across the lino when you apply pressure on the cutting tool. Cheers happy lino cutting
I hope so. I've got several sections that are mid-tone and in the centre I have a black spider on a black background....so not sure how I'm going to do that. A little modifying needed as I go along.
Many thanks Tricia. Looking forward to seeing completed work.

Very impressive work Tricia. Where did you get the design and was it drawn directly onto the lino with pen and ink? Will look great when completed.
Wow, what a project, it going to be fantastic.

Give me the measurements and I will see what I have got

A lot of work in that!
Going to look great when it's printed🙂
